RE: Stolen: Google employees' personal data
It should come as no surprise that Yes - even Google is susceptible to data loss. Especially when they hire a 3rd party to store and manage that data.

What is hard to come to terms with is that a company collecting and storing social security numbers is not encrypting that data. Today it is extremely easy an inexpensive to encrypt data on practically any device. Companies should be mandated by their contracts to do so. Google should have talked with Colt Express prior to hiring them to ensure this was the case.

If Colt Express was contractually obliged to encrypt the data then Google can bring a lawsuit against Colt Express. This will of course not bring back the stolen data.

On a side note, if you personally want a cheap and easy encryption software then you might want to consider TrueCrypt. Of course, it is only works if you use it properly (strong cipher, strong password, etc). www.truecrypt.org
