John is more right
If you are running a computer without a firewall, and without virus protection, and you engage in unsafe practices, then you are going to have an issue.

If you have a firewall and up to date antivirus software, using IE is still an unsafe practice. What John says about crashing applies here. No matter what precautions are taken, you can still crash the car. No matter how many times you patch, there will always be something you can click on using IE and get spyware at the minimum, especially if you allow any ActiveX controls at all, and if you don't allow them, then why use IE. Which leads to the next point. The other browser alternatives are more feature rich and won't infect you with something by merely clicking on something. You will consciously have to download something and install it.

Windows can be very safe if you don't use any Microsoft applications to access a network.
