my responce.
--- There are three things at issue in relation to maintenance.
The first is Microsoft's promise of a secure system.---

I have never seen MS promise a fool proof mouse trap, did i expect the high amount of issues no, but if you got caught up in the marketing BS of any company, well then grow up.

--- This increasingly seen as an empty promise and puts into
question any promises they might make in future. ---
something i have never understood, is many posters here seem to think that when ms started "trust worthy computing" all of a sudden the security holes we gonna disappear, it gotta get worse before it gets better when it comes to legacy systems.

--- Second is
increasing Windows complexity. Complexity is an anathema
to stability, security, and maintenance.---

compared to what? show me a system that can do EVERYTHING windows can do with all the useability, and with perfect security.

--- Third is the volume
of these problems. It's just too much.---

Then do one of two things, switch platforms and resume you bad computing practices, or don't use computers and hire an additional 50% to make up for it.

As Bill Gates makes a new proclaimation this week
regarding how Microsoft is going to attack spam - it sounds
alot like trustworthy computing prior to Sobig.

I am not sure what you mean by this.

---Microsoft, though inaction, has contributed greatly to spam and virus problems.---

They have provided free tools, in the way of software, scripts, and support to help administrators fix the problems in thier investment. Should MS have to come to your office and fix it for you? some say yes, i say no, it is unreasonable. As far as viruses are concerned, for me they are a joke, i haven't had a virus outbreak in over 2 years on any system i administer which tells me that a lot of admins just don't get it. They say they are over worked, would they still be if they were properly educated? how long does it take to clean up a code red infection vs. putting a simple firewall in place, patching and running IIS lockdown? and ounce of prevention is worth 5 pounds of cure.

---Meanwhile their behavior as a company does
more than any other to inspire malicious actions.---
why are they attacked? because they don't give away thier IP? I am sure you have read up on the multiple flaw of other OS's why aren't they exploited en masse? because its impossible to write a propagating worm? no. because its not likely to make any headlines and get you kudo's from your little buddies? probably.

--- So to sum up - it's been lies, flaws, apologies, and patches - years worth.---

the one OS that has come out since trust worthy computing has like 5 uncovered flaws most of which are unexploitable on a properly configured server. It isn't perfect but it is better than most.

--- You have to admire those spammers, they've taken
their cues from, and partnered with, an experienced mentor.---

No i loath a dispise them which is why when i have to use Exchange as an SMTP Server (never my choice) I make damn sure its locked down.

the day Microsoft loses market share, is the day you start seeing alternative OS's get viruses, except maybe MAC's which seem to be the most secure (according to cert and such.)

--- End of Rant---
this was not really ment to be a flame, and in fact most of it wasn't directed @ you (Harry)

- Sam

p.s. i have no preview paine so if spelling is screwed up oh well.
