I think that its the IT Press that has been asleep
The real problem is that the IT press is so pro-Intel they can't see the forest for the trees. AMD is a small company with a limited marketing budget. If you had done any reading at the time the AMD-32/64 processors were first announced and going back to the original "Hammer" announcements. You would have known about DEP having been developed by and added to AMD processors.

I frankly question whether Intel's new 64-bit extensions are really just a marketing ploy in the form of internal code to read 64 bit instructions and then down convert them to execute on a 32-bit processor, or if their new CPUs are really 64 bit capable like the AMD chips. Intel has been very evasive for lack of a better term about just what their term "64 bit extensions" means. Now there is a story for you to investigate.

Speaking of areas where Intel lags: Another is SOI, or silicon on insulator technology. This is one of the main reasons why their Prescott chips run so hot and draw so much power. Thanks to SOI AMD processors draw less power and can get by with smaller heat sinks and quieter fans. This heat issue is why Intel is pressing for the BX system board standard. They want to create a wind tunnel through the middle of your system case to cool down their future CPUs. Intel's quest for more megahertz is forcing them down this dubious design path.

A lot of intelligent design choices have gone into the recent AMD processors designs. AMD's focus has been to do more with less megahertz. Its time for the IT press to wake up and smell the roses.

PS: I build a lot of AMD systems for my clients and they are very stable and just as fast, or slightly faster than the equivalent Intel CPUs. They are much more adept at handling scatter gather code found in most office applications and games versus the Intel P4 processors. AMD systems are typically $150.00-$175.00 less expensive, which makes them much more cost effective.
