That inconvenient truth would be this: ...
That somebody has to pay for the infrastructure. And that those people will want to have some say in what goes across it.

I agree with you that this would be "giving up"; but unlike you, I see clearly that we have a choice of getting good surrender terms, or letting the folks who own and pay for the infrastructure make up their own, unconditional terms.
