no prison is nice...
... but Norway doesn't consider the prison itself to be part of the punishment. The punishment is incarceration. They consider that the conditions should be humane.

The purpose of imprisonment can be seem with two views.

1. Punishment & removal from the rest of society to protect them.

2. Rehabilitation & removal from the rest of society to protect them

There is plenty of evidence to suggest that recividism can be limited by rehabilitation inside prison and support outside. Now this is not going to work in every case... but in some countries (taking viewpoint 2) the effort is taken more seriously than in others, especially those with viewpoint 1.

Norway along with the other Scandavian societies falls squarely into category 2, most prisions are mixed for example and I believe that there are unsegregated activities in the prisons. A google search will find a load of information.
