The "Outbound blocking" myth rears it's ugly head again
I've seen this 'no outbound blocking' complaint by many people since SP2 went out for public testing. Windows firewall does exactly what it needs to do to provide the protection that clueless people need - it stops incoming connection attempts.

The whole outbound blocking thing is little more than a marketing tool that Firewall companies came up with awhile ago to distiguish themselves from the others.

Once hostile code has gained root access to your system, you've already lost. Any firewall can be easily disabled or cicumvented with only a few lines of code.

Relying on outbound blocking to save you from malware is like relying on the heart of your order against Eric Gagne in the 9th; You still have a slim chance, but for the most part, it's "Game Over" for you.

After SP2 comes out and 90% of windows users run firewalls, virus/malware authors will adapt and add the two or three lines of code needed to disable the most popular firewalls out there.
