No hidden functionality. . .
A computer has to read and parse data and executable files. If the routine that does that has a flaw, then specially constructed data can crash that machine. In this case the code libraries cirulated to read PNG files were flawed, hence the problem.

These "Stupid flaws" are in every piece of software ever created by humans. Some code has fewer flaws than others, you could even create the perfect program, only to find that the compiler it has to be run through to create executable files has a flaw that introduces a bug into your perfect code when executed. Enjoy!
