Some RPM based distros have developed ways around this problem by creating "apt-get" like programs for their products. Mandrake has urpmi. Software (most) for Mandrakelinux is kept in repositories that have a database file (hdlist) that tells urpmi which dependent library or file to download and install with each major package (rpm) you select. There is a graphical user interface (GUI) for urpmi called rpmdrake. You select the package you want to install from the database and urpmi will ask you if it should install all of the dependent packages with it. If you click "yes", urpmi takes care of the dependencies for you. It will even put an entry in the menu for the new program (just like Windows does). For you commandline guys just type "urpmi packagename" (for example urpmi xmms) as root and urpmi does the rest. There is also Ximian's Red Carpet which does a great job with RPM dependancies. SuSE has a package mananger that does a decent job, too.
