RE: HP stuck with malware, China Phobia - stick with Linux
HP also doesn't post patches in time. I lost two HP laptops to zero-day attacks because of this. http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=745&tag=btxcsim

One was so bad, the 2yr old hdd was replaced. Needless to say, all my machines now run a flavor of linux as primary OS and XP is run virtualized just for programming work. My choice of flavor is Dreamlinux.

If that wasn't enough, a rootkit was transmitted when connected to an HP plant's LAN & this 3d laptop unwittingly infected a 4th machine. Get this - 3 of those machines were malware-hardened according to very current security practices.

China is swimming with rootkits, malware and virii are the least of the problems. The last 2 laptops are on project in China now. One of them & several Symbian & Win-mobile cellular fones had a proof-of-concept attack recently. System parameters were adjusted at random and who knows what else.

Guys, beware China.
