Britain is a surveillance society already
Interesting article. It says that people fear Britain is becoming a surveillance society.

But surely Britain is already a surveillance society.

Under the Home Office Voluntary Code of Practice on Data Retention your web activity, e-mail activity and details of phone calls are retained for varying periods.

Your banking details are kept for seven years. Details of your mail are probably stored by the post office, and your car journeys are recorded by automatic numberplate recognition cameras. There are an estimated six million CCTV cameras watching you.

I suspect people are reluctant to describe this as a surveillance society because they think in terms of old-fashioned police states like East Germany. They think there needs to be an ideology motivating the whole thing.

But the surveillance we now have is just as capable of damaging society, even if there is no ideology behind it.
