The Pentagon is making a mistake
The point about being able to travel to the location and make direct observations is correct; de-Googlizing the maps & pictures only adds a step to the attack planning process.

One of the things that we were always breifed on for security is to ensure we did not fall into a long-lasting, predictable pattern of behavior. You change locations, change times, add people, remove people, and as mentioned by others earlier in the thread, do eveything you can to be unpredictable.

Now Google usually doesn't have up-to-the-minute updates on their site. One of the best ways to foil a terrorist attack on a military installation would be to have the stored images always be several changes behind the current security setup. That way they'd never know for sure what to expect unless they physically traveled there to look. i.e. back to step 1.

The other factor is that there are large numbers of people (contractors, families, military members, government officials, etc. with legitimate needs to know how to get around those installations that aren't provided maps and instructions. With circumstances what they are, there aren't enough people to detail to escort all of those folks to and from their destinations, and rarely are they provided printed maps by the gate guards. Googling the information is the most efficient way to find out where you need to go.
