Silly man!
A 4 digit PIN is NOT a joke for securing data.

The PIN is NOT the enctyption key, it's simply identifying you as the owner of the card.

The PIN block is encrypted with triple DES that has an effective key length of 112 bits. Admittedly not the most secure in the world of cryptography, but with frequent key changes it can be quite secure.
