Linux - Because a 386 is a terrible thing to waste.
I do not believe that Gentoo for Intel will run on anything less than a 486 but "emerge sync" keeps a 486 as updated as an Athlon64FX or a four-way Opteron server. Even a dual PowerPC G5. ...G4! ...G3!

...Or an IA64 for that matter if that's what you're into.

If I want to update the Win98SE on Debra's (not her real name) Pentium 133MHz laptop to the latest patched Microsoft product, tough cookies! It's already there! WinME, Win2k, WinXP, Win2k3; none of these can be loaded on that laptop.

So to secure her, she either has to buy a new laptop or do a lateral upgrade to a Linux/Unix platform.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch...
emerge sync
