Can I use Firefox on my Gentoo box to find info on an Apache website hosted on a FreeBSD box and find that an ftp server with system privelidges has now been installed on my computer?

I can do it with IE6SP1 on a Win2k box when I find info on an IIS site on a Win2k3 server.

You think Bill Gates should market this as a feature? OH WAIT! He does! Except he did not get that specific in telling his customers what could happen if you leave all these cool default features turned on. Neither did he tell his regular customer base how to turn it off.

My Gentoo comes with full, complete instructions with tips and hints before I even start the installation. I know what I am getting into and some of my other less-technical friends had a technical friend help them.

In doing this, even the less technical have some idea of what to expect. My friend, Ellen, (not her real name), bought her new computer from Dell with WinXPSP1 Home Ed. and is totally in the dark.

There are huge differences in the two platforms. They do not affect my ability to surf, read e-mail, do word processing, analyse spreadsheets, query databases or anything else for which I will need a computer.

Just different in the way the computer reacts to third-party requests to execute commands on my system.
