Linux and windows are worlds apart with regard to security, but only if you turn on the SELinux features in the new Linux 2.6 kernel or install LIDS.

If you do, you can get about the same security level as Trusted Solaris provided you configure your security policy wisely. However this is a job for a experts, and it would be nice if more Linux distros made some more effort to help in this field.

As long as you rely on permissions only, there is not much difference. The reason we have less problems in the Linux world today, is probably more due to that Linux users and Linux admins are more skilled than our windows friends than to any technical differences in the OSes.
