You are probably right
This would save us from viruses, and it would probably save Microsoft from Linux as well.

The problem is that there is a lot of hardware out there that can't run the latest and greatest from Microsoft, so unless they payed for new hardware as well, it wouldn't work.

Hmm..., that would perhaps not be such a bad idea. Give away some hardware, make sure the you need patented technology to write drivers for it. And Microsoft could have both viruses and Linux go away in one hit. Probably a bit expensive even for Microsoft though.
