Too harsh
The solution (of booting the dummies who allow their PCs to become infected off the internet) is way too harsh to be accepted.

To draw analogy to the auto safety example, we could consider an analogous solution. Take away the licenses of the fools who break traffic laws. Get caught speeding, lose your license. If we did this it would certainly save millions of dollars and countless lives.

But no one in this country could live with that solution. People speed on our highways, and accept the risk of getting a ticket. People run computers without proper antivirus software, and accept the risk of becoming infected.

I am also not convinced that Microsoft should be held liable for security holes. At least not in the sense that they should have to pay billions of dollars in damages because of security holes in Windows. After all, there have been security holes in Linux as well. Maybe not so many, but no one expects to sue the Linux open source community.

I really don't know what the solution is. I don't know whether a solution is even possible, because applications and systems get more complex as machines become more powerful. So where a hacker had one avenue of attack 5 years ago, today there are 10. And 5 years from now there will likely be 100. I really have to agree with you when you say that the release of a new Windows update will not do much to end the day of the Windows Network Worm. I don't hold out much hope for Longhorn though. Because Longhorn will be bigger, with more pieces, there will be more avenues of attack.

We as consumers want an internet that is anonymous, free, and available to all. That's what we have. It's anonymous, so people can create and post these things. It's free, so ISPs do not have the resources to monitor or support people who become infected. And it's available to all, including hackers.
