you are correct, but....
The anitvirus software should have been updated enough to catch that virus prior, even my father who knows nothing about PC's knows that much. He set his own virus updates to be checked every day, so he would at least have the latest. Virus companies are pretty good anymore about making it as easy as possible to update the signatures on a time table, and they get an update out almost immediately when an outbreak occurs. This is just showing how incapable most home users are. They figure if they have it update once a week they'll not need to worry. Myself, I make sure my AV in the companies check more than once a day, it really doesn't take all that much bandwith if you check prior to everyone getting in, at lunchtime, and around 3 in the afternoon. If there are no updates it checks for a few seconds and then done.

I like the idea of cutting off the internet, simply due to the fact that alot of home users i'm finding anymore don't even have an AV. Alot of the PC's come with symantec i'm seeing as well, but symantec live update eventually comes with the message about registering and whatnot and people think they can no longer use it. This situation happened with dad, he didn't update any of his AV for 3 months before calling me up and telling me he had a problem. I'm sure many home users who know nothing about PC's find this problem. I recommend AVG to everyone now a days, it's free, does a great job, and doesn't make it hard for users.

All in all, users are starting to get better because they are tired of bogged down PC's and after a recommendation to buy a AV program, they find it runs quicker after everything is cleared off, and they stick with it. More home users need alot of education, and the people who create the OS of choice need to do their part in educating these users on how these things work, along with what kinds of problems can the OS be subject to. Bottom line, every OS has exploits and nothing is secure when it's made by humans, but giving false pretenses to normal users simply isn't cutting it.

Just my 2 cents.
