high five on this article. I think that we, as the authors of the content which makes up the "social network" medium, have the full rights to control the distribution of such highly demanded commodity.

Which means new features giving user the ability to specify how "visible" or "target-able" you are, beyond the current private profile settings. Social Networks must adopt to different demographics of users with natural communities - i.e. some of your friends love the publicity and some do not.

Otherwise as you imply there will be an equilibrium shift and a new market leader will emerge.
