"Many eyes" argument a bit over hyped
While the source code to many open source projects is readily available (goes with the territory). It takes a certain skill set as well as out and out verve to go make sense of it all and do something useful with it.

Also, code that deals with SSL certificates is far more specialized and also an area you're likely to have even FEWER eyes than the much more common "buffer overflow" problem. In the case of the latter you can actually write tools to look for certain patterns in the source code where such an exploit might exist.
