Stupid is as Stupid does....
>>Since when do we start blaming users for defective products (i.e. Windows, Outlook, IE, etc...)

People buy computers as appliances to get a job done. Period. Not everyone is a damned Geek, and not everyone enjoys spending hours a day tuning, tweaking, twisting or whatever their computers for the fun of it.<<

For what it's worth, you can't have it both ways. You're right. People buy computers to get whatever given job they need done, done. And you're right, not everyone falls into the Geek catagory. Nor can they be expected to spend hours and hours tweaking stuff on their computers.

On the other hand, there are some simple truths here that you tend to be ignoring...

To borrow from the automotive analogy... A while back there was a rather well publicized scandal involving certain SUVs and bad tires. Now then, if your vechile had the bad tires on it and you saw the reports on the news and you DID nothing about it - then who's fault is it when your SUV blows one of the defective tires and causes it to roll over.

Granted, the manufacturer has to bear some responsibility in this, but at some point, after the tires have been on the news, YOU have to bear some of that responsibility yourself for NOT going to the dealer and getting a new set of tires.

There are LOTS of 3rd party products that are inexpensive and do a pretty good job of defending a given computer or network from intrustion and other assorted hijinx.

Going on line without any protection these days is not excusable. There's been more than enough coverage of viruses, worms and, of course, the flaws in Windows they exploit. Even those who don't fit into the "Geek" catatory have no excuse. There ARE more than enough geeks to go around to help out.

Granted, there ARE things that could be improved. Yes, Microsoft can make their product better. In the mean time, users can take responsibility for their computers and run a firewall and a good antivirus program.

In fact, I'm willing to go one step further. I challenge all the "geeks" out there (you all know who you are) to make sure all your family, friends and colleagues have up to date AV and firewall protection running on their computers.

No one is blaming the consumer for bugs and product defects. But at the same time, the consumer has to bear some responsibility too. Just like it's your responsibility to maintain your car in good working order, keep the oil changed, tires properly inflated, windows clean, etc..., it's YOUR responsibility to make sure your computer is kept up - patches, updates, AV software, firewall, etc..
