No, not the same at all
"I need to update Linux boxes every week"

You do? What distribution do you use that has remotely
exploitable bugs squashed every week. Hint: just because
an update is made available doesn't mean you have to
apply it. Read the announcements.

"If the Linux folks saved up all of their patches for as long
as MS did then you would get a large SP2 updated from
Linux.org."

MS didn't save up their patches for SP2, SP2 will bundle
their public patches so new users don't have the hundreds
of MB of patches for their new windows box that many
would have to download over 56 dialup.

However, SP2 goal is to change windows to tighten its
woeful security model. Whether it is successful we'll see,
but given the stories of delayed MS products it appears to
be a far bigger task than they had imagined.

"Unlike Linux, MS needs to go through a more complete
testing before they release new code because their end
users are not geeks or hackers who are able to fix the code
on their own."

No it is because the fundamental changes required to the
security model, for features that were missing from
windows but have been part of *nix for decades. Even after
SP2 they will still have a much poorer model compared with
*nix.

"Half the time that I have installed Redhat I have needed to
fix code because it DID NOT WORK as installed"

Fix code? or make changes to the config settings?

"Today I am monkeying around with SuSE 9.1 trying to get
it to connect to a Redhat 9 with PopTop 1.3 or a MS
Windows server using PPTP"

I run IPSec and things are just fine with both windows and
*nix clients. Oh, I see you want to use the MS hack
protocol.

"I have never had that problem with Visual Studio, Word or
Excel."

NEVER? You must be joking:-)
