Amen to that!
I was raised to shut-up and listen to those older than myself. It took me a long time to find my voice, and am still afflicted with indecisions.

When raising my daughter, I answered all the questions I knew answers to, and later I showed her how to find them on her own. She actually got angry when I told her that I didn't know the answer to her questions, as she thought I was holding out on her! That's how much children depend on their parents to provide guidance! And my daughter was not a scared, shy child as I was -- she knew her own mind, but she still relied on me for answers to her questions about the world.

What if I didn't care to answer them? I'm sure she would have gotten them from someone else, maybe someone who didn't care for her welfare either.
