- Food for thought? You're the one who needs to think.

"The only reason you don't have many viruses/worms/Trojans is
simply because that's not where the money is."
Even if that were true (which it's not), what difference does it
make? The source of the risk is irrelevant. Sound risk
management principles still dictate that you should adopt a
safer operating system, regardless of what the reason is. If you
want to stick with Windows, you will need to take increasingly
greater precautions, which cost significant time and money that
you would not be losing if you used Mac OS X or Linux.
If you live in a bad neighborhood, you have to buy heavier
doors, stronger, more elaborate locks, and a home security
system. Move to a better neighborhood and these precautions
simply aren't necessary. You Windows zealots are living in a bad
neighborhood, paying too much for rent, and afraid to go out at
night. That's no way to live your life.
"Servers don't count much since most viruses take advantage of
unsuspecting users to spread."
That's not true anymore. Several recent worms have used
compromised servers, at some pretty mainstream sites, to
propagate themselves.
Windows is unsuitable as a server platform or a desktop OS. It's
really not good for anything. I won't do business with an online
store that's running on Windows. I either go elsewhere or phone
in my order. I like to shop at Barnes and Noble, but if I buy
books online I go to Amazon. I just don't trust my credit card
number to a site that's running Windows. There have been too
many exploits. Besides, Amazon's prices are better. That's not
surprising--their operating costs must be lower. - Posted by: Immanuel Tranz-Mischen Posted on: 07/22/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
