- FINALLY someone is catching on...
-
And no, it's NOT just about security. I have NEVER understood the concept that you plunk a PC in front of someone and set them loose to figure it out on their own.
I was working recently in a factory and I asked one of the fork lift drivers how he was trained to drive his fork lift around so many people. He told me he had to take a safe driving course put on by the fork lift vendor and paid for by his company. The course was three days in length with follow up testing every 6 months. In addition his pay scale was tied to a safe driving record while in the plant. (Bonus paid every 6 months without an accident.)
Then I asked him how he was trained to use the PC on the loading docks. (Used to track loads and customer orders.) Not surprisingly he said he had never really been trained. There was one guy that worked the docks and he was a "computer guru" that knew all about computers and he showed others how to do what they needed to do and if they had a problem he was the first one called. (NOT IT) He went on to say "I hate the damned thing, I'm always afraid I'll do something wrong and screw it up and will catch hell for it".
Now it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see where the problem is or who is at fault. Management has clearly dropped the ball by failing to put any importance on using the computer. In fact by NOT demonstrating how important it is, the employee is given the idea it doesn't matter. After all, it's not important enough for the boss to train me, it can't be very important can it???
Perhaps the security issue is one that will grab management by the throat and shakes some common sense into it... - Posted by: No_Ax_to_Grind Posted on: 07/22/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
