"And virus writers are simply not targeting Linux and OSX because of their pathetic marketshare. They go where the money is."
I hope you can *show* the proof of this. Proving the reason that humans do something usually involves interviewing at least a sample population.
As far as servers go, I however CAN show you the proof that large companies like Amazon, Google, ZDNet, banks, government agencies, etc. use Linux and Apache as opposed to Windows and IIS.
Do many 'hackers' hit these sites as often as the Win/IIS ones? The real question is CAN they hit them? Imagine the fame of bringing one of the above-mentioned sites repeatedly to their knees. But not many of them can do it. It's simply easier to get into a Windows system.
Aside from all that, your inability to technically comprehend the architecture of Operating Systems shouldn't be a reason to give way to a "popularity is the only reason" conclusion.
Mr. Clock (or 'Jelly' as I call him by his real name) did try to summerize the reasons for insecurity vs security between the different OSs. To fully understand what is involved, you should look into an Operating Systems or Computer Architecture course. It should go into lots of areas such as interprocess communication, resource & memory management; but more importantly- process and resource protection. THIS is what Jellyclock was witing about! Where I did my M.S., there was a course "739 Topics in Operating Systems" that did a comparative survey of OSs. That's a nice one too.
And as I still propose, the end user should have *some* idea of what they are doing.
When a burgler robs a house, I blame the bugler even if all the doors were left wide open. They broke the law.
But I believe that some insurance companies will not cover loss like this in some instances. - Posted by: SC-man Posted on: 07/22/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
