#1 problem is user apathy
When it comes to Windows I am consistently amazed at all the noise made about antivirus software, firewalls and such but the single greatest thing users can do to protect themselves is to have "limited accounts." Unfortunately both MS and various software vendors have done a poor job of getting the word out, particularly to home users who are now are getting the benefit of an OS with the notion of true accounts (and security features that go with that). But the problem is no one seems to leverage this. Adding resistance to this is all the software that simply will not install or work if you are operating under a "limited account."

Beyond that it amazes me that some people bother with IE after I educated them as to the significant risks they carry by using that browser choice. Yeah sure there's the usual "this page doesn't work with Mozilla" but I have found that consumer facing sites have largely eschewed browser specific choices... that is because businesses that want your dollar are not doing themselves a favor if you cannot reach the information you seek. Sites that used to be a problem no longer are, e.g., bmwusa.com, ea.com, sony.com, store.nintendo.com. Some of these were a problem YEARS ago as opposed to any time recently.

Yes, I have to agree with this article's title. It very much is YOU... sorry folks, ignorance is not bliss... and Lord knows there is an awful lot of it these days.
