Terrorism not a significant cause of death

Maybe the USA is just getting over its naivity.

From a purely objective national viewpoint (i.e. not you or your immediate family) terrorism is unlikely to effect your life expectancy outside active warzones of the Middle East -- and not much there.

As realists pointed out in terms of deaths 9/11 was like a week's worth of automobile crashes or heart attacks or a year's worth of weather deaths, etc. In terms of property damage about the same.

The key unusual aspect of 9/11 compared to other causes of death was that losses were concentrated in a few corporate ranks and single city in couple of hours. Primarily that meant that certain stocks were going to be "bombed" too no matter how people reacted.

Still natural disasters like Katrina cause similar corporate property losses and stock drops.

Maybe the USA can learn to ignore the emotional anxiety of terrorism and react to the news just like car crashes or fires in a distant city. Not something you change the way you live or the laws you govern by.
