I have been a Vonage customer for over a year now. I have a TiVo, a fax machine, alarm system, dial-up modems and cordless phones attached to my VoIP. No special setup, no FAX port, just a Cisco ATA 186 (I've also used the Motorola adapter with great success). Everything works great!
I will say that I feel that I get better performance now that I am connected to a cable internet service than when I used a residential DSL service.
There is nothing VoIP cannot do. As for a business that wants a phonebook listing, you can certainly get one if you ask your advertising rep. They will give you a text listing free with any ad. Honestly, I'm not sure I would choose to run a business on VoIP alone, but I believe in redundant systems, providers and copper for most business activities.
A side note on your alarm: Don't trust any phone line in your alarm system. Burglars know to cut your phone line. Call your alarm company TODAY and demand a cellular backup (I would recommend Cellemetry or Alarm.com).
