It's not the modem....

It's the way in which VoIP saves bandwidth going over phone lines. Basically, your normal phone line has a carrier signal. It's what you'd call a dial tone. It's always there. VoIP doesn't have this. It's only on when someone's actively sending data. So, rather than having a carrier signal, it uses packets, exactly like TCP/IP. This lack of a constant signal is what befuddles modems. A modem, in order to stay connected, needs to have a constant communication. When you swap over to VoIP and remove that, you're losing your modem's required constant talk time. So, basically, TiVo can no longer connect because it has been outdated. Now, if you switch it over to USB, which doesn't require constant communication, you're set.
