Yes there's issues
TiVo has a typical analog modem to connect over regular analog lines, as you mentioned. But I have had *some* success in getting TiVo to work over VOIP. I think the problem is that there is some interference between the VOIP sampling and modem signal, and it causes the modem to drop the connection after a few seconds. Basically there's some technical reason I don't understand why TiVo doesn't work with VOIP. I think some adaptors have special "fax" ports that handle modem type signals better. Check with your VOIP provider to see if this is an option.

Then again, since you already have the broadband, getting the $20 adaptor makes sense. Plus putting TiVo on your home network has the advantage that you can have TiVo stream MP3s from your PC to your living room. Very cool! This assumes you have TiVo v2, not sure about the older TiVos.

And no, I have not had problems with the VOIP service using a noticeable amount of bandwidth, either while talking on the phone or not. I can even play online games while my wife chats with her friends with no increased lag at all.
