Use a text-based mail client. Since no one does that, tell your mail client to not load images (keeps the spam/phisher's image servers from seeing that you opened the mail validating your address) and, if at all possible, display the content in plain text. If you use Thunderbird, you can enable HTML and images from specific sender addresses, so even this won't inhibit your real mail.

Even with best practices and techniques, I still delete phishing e-mails.
