Another gov revenue stream...
I chose VoIP as my primary phone service for 3 reasons:

1-Very competitive capabilities, including voice mail;
2-Very inexpensive long distance (this cash cow has been
milked for years by companies who constructed and paid
for their networks long ago, and had simply been reaping
obscene profits..at least until DE-regulation; of course, that
has all changed now);
3-my traditional phone service, without long distance, had
been saddled by taxes totaling over 20% of the total bill
(note that the universal service fund was an expense that
was initially to be born by the phone companies as a cost of
doing business...NOT passed through to the customer).

But seeing the popularity of VoIP, the phone companies and
the local, state, and federal governments are wringing their
hands at a potential loss of revenue...and are drooling at
the possiblitiy of a far greater source of revenue.

Of course, you know the story of the goose that laid the
golden egg...
