But sycophants are downright hilarious
There was reason to suspect that Iraq had WMD, however there was no reason to suspect that they were any threat to the US.

I think what sticks in most people's craw is that the Bush administration had a clear agenda to start a war with Iraq come hell or high water. They used over-blown claims about WMD as an excuse, it was never the reason.

There are a number of strategic reasons why the US may have wanted to invade Iraq, not one of which is based on a genuine military threat. The most likely is that the US didn't want Iraq to become a fundamentalist Moslem country. That would have precipitated a fall of the Saudi regime and the installation of a fundamentalist government in one of the US's strongest middle east allies. Ever wonder why the US so solidly backs a hereditary monarch that was established off the back of a dictatorship? That's what the Saudi "royal" family is.

Saudi has strict Islamic law, very little freedom and is utterly intolerant of any religion other than Islam. Women and foreigners are abused and mistreated, public executions are carried out every Friday, you need a visa to leave the country, the King?s power is absolute, there are no elections, no freedom of speech, no free press, no free TV, no right to even gather in public. There are no bars, theatres or public eventes that everyone can attentd - it's men only for just about everything - women aren't even allowed to drive a car. But they do have squillions of litres of oil and the King is quite friendly with the US, despite the apparent contradiction with local politics. Seems the US doesn?t care too much about the lot of your average Saudi, does it?

Anyhow, my best guess is that the US didn't want a string of Sharia-based governments stretching from Saudi to Pakistan - imagine the oil wealth and economic power such a block could wield! Not to mention that the Pakistanis already have nuclear weapons.

The most likely strategic reason why the US wanted to oust Sadam is that they wanted to stop the creation of an oil-based economic block that might threaten the US.
