Flaws In MS
Hands up all those programmers out there that have ever written a buffer routine, now put down your hands if you didn't write the routine for the last project that needed a buffer... Not many left, yes, the truth is you used a library routine or you may not even knew you were using it if you work for MS.

For so many buffer overflows in so many software packages this has to be the case with MS, it's not that they keep writing the same code wrong, someone in the beginning wrote it wrong and no one has fixed it. Which means it's an organisation thing. No one fixes it properly because it takes time and resources so it remains probably now duplicated into so many libraraies on so many systems MS has lost track. Time and resources cost money and to find all of those needles in the giant MS haystack would cost lots of money. Of course this is no real object to Open Source, everyone contributes there time for the common good. This is what really annoys MS about OSS it costs them but OSS programmers feel good about fixing the problem and you can't beat "the feel good" factor with any kind of money.

It seems to me looking from the outside that it is yet another case of an organization having grown too fast trying to do too may things in an attempt to overwhelm their compettitors and in the process stored up all kinds of horrors for them selves.

Given time I'm sure windows could be made into a very reliable desktop system, I'm not so sure that IE will ever be made into anything near reliable or safe, in any reasonable amount of time.

Of course time and money wait for no man.
