I mean, if you're a lowly news-drone in the c|net hive, you have to find little ways to rebel. I've talked with headline writers in the past (big newspapers used to have guys who wrote all the headlines, to enoforce consistent style), and they've told tales of exercising subversive control over the message through the article title.

Perhaps something similar is going on here. The author focused on Gartner's iPod obsession as a way of pointing out the absurdity of the issue. (Which, BTW, is an absurdity that touches all of our entire lives, as the previous posters have noted. This isn't just a technological absurdity, though technology has give us a nice little "burglary tool", in this particular case.)
