Yeh, those darn "workers"...can't eliminate them as risks, ...
... can't shoot 'em.

There's some deeper truth to this story that's new and technology-driven, but mostly it's a new variation on the old decision: Do you trust the people who work for you, or not?

It's not a black and white question. There are degrees of trust, and locking down configurations to prevent USB attachment could be seen as a way of protecting people from themselves. But it takes work to define and maintain those configs (regardless of your platform), and you just can't do it if you take the "IT doesn't matter" paradigm to heart.

Personally, I prefer not to work for companies who are so buttoned-down that I can't plug in a USB hard drive -- but that's mostly because it's been my experience that corporate backups are basically worthless, so I want my own backup workaround. If the IT staff is good and gets the support it needs to solve issues like that, then I have less of a problem.
