- Why --it is your job!

You attitude is the type that gives our profession (meaning IT) a bad name. There are many of us that are trying hard to educate the public, but they must have knowledge, at a alevel they understand in order to be aware.
I do not know what your position is at the law firm you work for, but I can safely say that you would not last long in ours. I could see you going to the computer of the senior partner, who is very senior and very wealthy, and telling him he is a moron. Yep, that would keep you employed.
At his age, and at his level and status he hires people to handle problems like this. The other partners have varying degree of computer expertise. I work with folks in the firm that have all levels of expertise. The primary function of a law firm is not computers, but the practice (artform??) of law. They have hired me and my staff to keep them basically aware and the computers working.
I am able to filter and resolve many problems before they hit the units in the offices, but mistakes happen. The staff of the firm and the Research & Technology staff of the firm get along very well because we try to quietly educate, and it works. We have had both new partners and new staff comment that they have learn more from my method and approach than the constant screaming they hear from the "computer guys" that yelled and berated them.
Getting down to the basics, we are PAID to be baby sitters. My personal expertise is unique as I also am over research too. I see lots of stupid stuff in research too, but it is my job to oversee it. It is not fair to refer to our employers and co-workers as morons when it is OUR job to educate them. Our sole purpose is to help these folks. They do not and will not ever have our level of training, skill, or expertise. It is our job to educate them the best way we can. Crap happens, and it is our job to fix it. Respect is a two way street and a little goes a long way to solving many problems. - Posted by: drichards1953 Posted on: 07/07/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
