Hold the blame game until you work in the real world
I fully understand your outrage at carelessness on the part of the computer users. However, you fail to consider several things and among them is that things a literally changin daily. Even moderatley computer literate users here at the law firm have a hard time. Many of the newer trojans and virus like critters are not as obvious as they once were.

You analogy is not appropriate, nor even a correct anaology. For example, I interecepted a trojan file today that had I not seen it one of the attorneys would have opened it. It was captioned "your bill". What do attorneys do best? I can assure you bill for their time. That looked innocent until one looked at the extension, and in this case it came from an email of a client.

Take the blame game as far as the users down a couple of notches. I agree some of it gets old, but gee that is why we are in the IT business. If everything worked as it should, then we would not be needed.

Also, I do place a great deal of blame in the laps of the folks at M$. Security was never a big interest with them. The folks in Redmond could potentially get hit with lawsuits for shipping flawed product. Many of these "holes" were as the result of incomplete testing, and poor structure. IF the folks in Redmond would quit trying to be all things to all people and simply focus on developing a good OS, that is nothing more than an OS, then Windows might have a future. From the sound of it though, Longhorn will carry an also known as title, the IT full employment software. It is bloated and has too much that is not wanted nor needed. Redmond fails to understand why Linus is gaining ground. It is mostly because it is not controlled by one company or person, and it is focused on being an operating system, with many looking for better functioning.

I do not disagree that out computer users, everywhere, could be better informed. It is our job to inform and educate them, not belittle and berate them.

If everyone knew what we did about IT, we would not be needed. I agree I get tired of the same problems over and over, but it is a part of my job.
