by hardware firewall, I mean any external device, configured to act as a firewall, so that the actual firwall software/firmware, does not reside on the device(s) protected. Basically any type of firewall that exists externally to all protected systems. While these hardware firewalls do indeed rely on software/firmware to provide their funcationality, if a hardware firewall is compromised, it would take some mad skills to exploit the internal network, as when most hardware devices are exploited, it results in a DOS by knocking the firewall offline, disconnecting the external and internal networks. There are exceptions on some of the more intelligent firewall and router devices, that attacks can be launched from the device itself, but those attacks are usually limited in scope, and it is almost impossible, not entirely impossible, but almost impossible for worms and viri to spread in this manner. Pure software firewalls, running on a protected PC however, can be exploited to execute code on the system, and have been used to spread viri and worms before.
