Brightmail is on the right track in my opinion but they are lacking the necessary link in taking the next step. That is notification to the zombie or it's ISP provider a notification email so that they can clean up their act.
What the entire Security community does not understand is that most people don't understand the difference between a legitimate tool used by developers to track usage and that same type of tool used by an unethical hacker to spread malicious code. Every Computer security guru should have a sign that blinks on his monitor that reads "Security is only as good as the person practicing it!" You guys are so deep into the details thatthe trees are blocking your view of the ultimate objective. Cryptology has been around since the Romans and only one thing has been proven. What one man can lock up, another can break into. At least Brightmail is on the right track with identification of "legit" commerical messages even if many of those same emails are considered SPAM.
