Who "hates to admit" this?
"As much as the die hards hate to admit, OS X, Linux and Windows have a lot in common. Install software under a trusted account and you really don't know what might happen."

I don't think that anyone would say that it's OK to install untrusted software on your computer. The whole reason that nobody but Microsoft has come up with anything like ActiveX is that nobody but Microsoft has been willing to swallow the myth that it's EVER safe to automatically install software.

"I don't know how many stories I've head from Windows that goes something like "I saw this link, run the install by accident, and got infected by a virus"."

That's the other side of the problem. Apple finally "got" this... and doesn't automatically offer to open "safe" downloaded files by default in Safari 3... and even in earlier versions you could turn that off. With Internet Explorer, there isn't an option to turn off the "ask the user if he wants to get infected" dialog.

Installing unknown software is risky. If your OS or browser doesn't let you say "just download it, tell me where it is, and don't bug me about it" so you have to install it deliberately, change it. Now. Even smart people who know all about computers can get caught by this... I know, I was system admin for 150 of them for 20 years. Banning IE was the most effective antivirus technique I ever applied.
