Even Windows users don't need to live in fear...
Not even Windows users need to live in fear. If you practice good software hygiene Windows is not horribly dangerous. What makes it a problem is one specific group of applications shipped with Windows and built into the API... those that use the Microsoft HTML control.

Because the HTML control's flaws are built into the design: they're not just bugs that can be fixed. It's like a pane of bulletproof glass with 1,000 holes in it, and Microsoft running around one by one epoxying over each hole after enough bullets have gone through it that they notice it's there... and other developers at Microsoft and elsewhere drilling new holes in it all the time... because they can't close all the holes without breaking Windows Explorer, Control Panel, Windows Update, and everything else that depends on automatically loading ActiveX applets.

Luckily, you don't have to stand in front of that window.
