You really need to research, NZ...
...before you open your noise trap. Don't get me wrong,
there are hundreds of variants of nearly every Windows
virus, trojan and other malware out there, but that
doesn't mean that the true number of attackers is small.
Just look at the databases of Symantic, McAfee and even
Panda and you will find thousands of different attackers
with double- and even triple-character varients,
meaning 26x26x26 or anywhere between 27 to 17000
variants of each of them A rough average would
probably be about 400 variants to over a thousand
different pieces of malware.

Yes, protection is a good idea; but with Windows it is
mandatory just to be useable. With a Mac, for now, a
true virus has yet to rear its ugly head. This Trojan is just
the opening shot in another long war.
