Installing unknown software is risky, no matter the OS
As much as the die hards hate to admit, OS X, Linux and Windows have a lot in common. Install software under a trusted account and you really don't know what might happen.

Now in Linux's favor is that source code is around for a lot if not most Linux software, but for the average computer user, that's not going to mean a whole lot.

I don't know how many stories I've head from Windows that goes something like "I saw this link, run the install by accident, and got infected by a virus". You don't need a sophisticated stealthy infection process, just a simple one to lure a user into doing. No OS is really immune from that, but once again, Linux has advantage here because Linux apps don't normally get installed from standalone installers. But if Linux were to get really hot on the desktop, I think that you'd see more stand alone installing programs.
