You got it flipped around

You are more at risk with a dialup connection than a broadband working thru a NAT router with or without firewall builtin. When I had only dialup I got far more pings and other hits then I currently get on my machine - meanwhile the router's firewall is logging the pings and hits instead. I would regularly get an intrusion alarm - and that was even after going thru several Shields Up sessions to make sure I did not have ports open. Seemed more to do with static addressing on the IP side, and sniffers working thru the address list - so even 'stealthed' as Steve Gibson puts it is not a full defense.

The amount of resources that ZoneAlarm takes for a dialup always seemed to be negligent to me. The problem has been configuration - and there as always a user is usually their worst enemy.

And frankly - if a machine is that cranky that a firewall might bring it down, then it's time to trash it - as it becomes nothing but a honeypot for trojans/spyware/malware - the load put on the machine from those kinda goodies will kill it faster than even Norton's POS firewall.
