- Updates are indeed a pain
-
And you're absolutely right about Norton and McAfee AV. Windows XP smokes right on along on a modern computer before either gets installed on it, and turns into Windows 95 on a 486 after.
But aside from that, from my experience anyway, updates in the Linux world aren't nearly as painful. They rarely require reboots, only kernel updates require that (module updates only require the module gets restarted). So Linux's modular design will always have an advantage over Windows when it comes to updates, at least until Windows becomes modular (will Longhorn be modular?). Also since you don't have the registry to worry about the updates tend to be smaller and install quicker.
Though of course ALL updates, no matter what the OS, are painful over 56K. If you ask me, the extra cost of broadband pays for itself simply due to the fact that it's easier to keep your system up to date, especially if you can schedule the updates to run overnight. The cost of getting your unpatched computer fixed far outweighs the extra cost of broadband. Especially if you live in an area with $30/month DSL. - Posted by: Michael Kelly Posted on: 07/01/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
