Is Skype a safer VoIP service for the home user, one may ask.

So far there are no known hacks into Skype calls. Of course, if you don't keep your password secret, anyone can access your account and make calls using your identity and credit. So users should be especially careful about phishing e-mails looking like they are from Skype and requesting log-in information (http://www.hl7.com.au/Skype.htm#Security).
