Exploiting Vulnerabilities
Spyware unfortunately has become very prevalant lately. However, spyware programs (like viruses) have always been present--it is just that spyware programs are exponentially increasing at the moment and are difficult for the average computer user to contend with. In contrast, virus protection has improved greatly in recent years, not just stand-alone software, but server software as well in terms of ease of use, realiability, etc.

As a technology consultant, I have spent more of my work-time combating spyware not viruses these days.

From my perspective it is very clear that these so-called spyware programs are identifying and exploiting system vulnerabilites, largely by using Internet browser(s) as a means to infect a computer (or other network resource). Other means include e-mail and 'social-engineering' to infect a user's computer as well.

Another unfortunate, but nonetheless important observation, is that many of the spwyare programs are targeting specific operating system vulnerabilites, spefically Windows (largely because it is the most popular desktop operating system at this time).

What technology professionals need to do is identify how such intrusions are taking place, and to create the logic necessary to prevent spyware intrusions--too difficult? I don't think so. As a matter of fact, I think the solutions already exist (they have for some time); however, I think the real question is 'who' is (or not) willing to implement those solutions to put a stop to the spyware nuisances in today's computing, and at who's expense.

Respectfully,

Todd Shillam
